WHETHER mathematical techniques can be, or should be, used in economics is a much-discussed question. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. The economist must be left to determine for himself, when he reads the following chapters, whether the exposition of some important economic theories in mathematical terms assists him in appreciating the theories and in working out their implications.
