The book has grown out of a fifteen-hour lecture course given to third-year mathematics undergraduates at the University of Kent, and it could be used either as an undergraduate or a postgraduate text. For elementary teaching the starred sections and Exercises may be omitted, but most of the material should be accessible to those possessing a knowledge of statistics at the level of A Basic Course in Statistics by Clarke and Cooke (1983). This book, henceforth referred to as 'ABC', is widely used for teaching statistics in schools. Most of the standard statistical theory encountered that is not in the revision Chapter 2 is given a page reference in ABC.
